Port barrels from WineX Storage are a great way to store and age your favorite port, whiskey, wines, rum, and liqueurs throughout the year. These port barrels are unique in the fact that they are made from recycled American oak. With varying capacities available, these port barrels are toasted on the inside for maximum flavor and aging potential.
Oak Port Barrels
These barrels are either referred to as port kegs or port barrels. Oak is typically the best wood because it adequately ages the liquor, adds flavor, and enhances the existing flavors in the liquor. Two processes, toasting or charring, blacken the inside of the barrel to help flavor the liquor in a way that the oak itself would not be able to do.
When an oak port barrel is toasted, it is typically done in an oven or with a naked flame. The wood is generally heated until it darkens in color. The lighter the toast, the lighter the flavor will be for the port, while heavier toasting will result in a more hearty, robust port flavor. WineX Storage oak barrels are toasted, which takes about 10 minutes. Toasting is generally a better process than charring because it penetrates deeper into the wood, creating a better flavor as the port is aged over time.
